How long it really takes, stage by stage

Every candidate asks for a date and every honest answer disappoints, because the stages that take the longest are the ones nobody in the chain controls. What can be said usefully is which stage owns the time, which ones can run alongside each other, and which single document decides whether the whole thing takes two months or six.

A wall calendar with a departure date circled in ink, a boarding pass tucked into the margin beside it

“He managed to acquire a low-speed table-top centrifuge, and would get blocks of ice from a nearby ice factory, crush them, and place them around the centrifuge so that his samples would remain cold during enzyme purification.”

Venkatraman Ramakrishnan on his father's laboratory in Baroda, autobiographical note for the Nobel Prize, 2009

He published anyway. What he could not do was skip the cold: the samples needed it, and no amount of urgency changed that. An overseas job file has the same character. Some of it you can hurry and some of it you cannot, and knowing which is which is the difference between a candidate who is ready when an employer says yes and one who loses the seat to paperwork.

Who actually owns the clock

The useful way to read a timeline is not by stage but by who controls it, because that tells you where pushing helps and where it does nothing at all.

StageWho controls itCan it be hurried?
Getting your documents togetherYouYes, entirely
Passport reissue, including ECR removalPassport Seva and police verificationNo
Employer selection and offerThe employerNo

Only two rows are yours. They are also the two that most often hold everything else up, which is the practical point of this page.

The one document that sets the whole timeline

The passport. Not because the fee is large, it is ₹1,500 for the ordinary booklet, but because reissue runs through police verification at the address on your file, which nobody in the chain can accelerate. If your passport needs renewing, needs a spelling corrected, or carries the Emigration Check Required endorsement you want removed, that clock starts the day you apply and everything else waits behind it.

Which is why the advice is always the same and always ignored: start it before you have an offer, not after. Our guide to the the routes to Non-ECR matters here, because your category decides whether your file later needs a clearance stage at all.

Several stages can run alongside each other, and often are not. Attestation does not have to wait for the medical. Insurance does not have to wait for anything. Police verification runs while you collect experience letters. A file that moves in a straight line because nobody thought to overlap the independent parts can take twice as long as the same file worked properly, with no stage having gone any faster.

Where the weeks actually go

  • Attestation. The longest stage you can start early. It passes through more than one office and for many countries ends at an embassy in India. Do not begin it before the destination is confirmed in writing, because the wrong route means paying twice.
  • Police verification on a passport reissue, at the address on record. Candidates who have moved miss the visit and restart the wait.
  • Name mismatches. A passport spelling that disagrees with a certificate is the single most common reason a file stalls, and it is discovered at the worst moment.
  • A medical that has to be repeated. Reports carry a validity window, and blood pressure, sugar and vision are what most often come back adverse.
  • An employer who is not yet registered on the portal, if your route needs clearance. Our walkthrough of eMigrate covers who files what.
  • Nobody following the file. The honest one. A file with no one chasing it moves at the speed of no one.
Nobody can sell you a faster government. An agent who offers to speed up police verification, attestation or emigration clearance for a payment is describing a bribe on a file that carries your name, not theirs. What a good agent genuinely does is make sure each submission is complete the first time, which is where real weeks are saved. Anyone quoting a firm departure date before a visa exists is quoting you a feeling.

What you can do this week

  1. Look at your passport today. Validity, spelling, and the last page. If anything needs fixing, that is this week's job and not next month's.
  2. Lay every document side by side and check the name matches across all of them, including the middle name and its order.
  3. Collect experience letters now, while the people who remember you are still at those companies.
  4. Get a private health check before an approved-centre medical is booked, so a surprise is cheap rather than expensive.
  5. Wait on attestation until the destination is confirmed, then start it the same week.
  6. Keep a photographed set of everything on your phone and emailed to yourself, so a request for a document is answered in minutes rather than days.

The full checklist sets out what goes in the file and in what order.

Where Disha fits, honestly

Disha Global Workforce recruits candidates with Non-ECR passports and a minimum qualification of 10+2, for the countries we actually serve in the Gulf, Southeast Asia and parts of Europe. We work under the authorisation of a licensed Recruiting Agent.

We will not give you a departure date before a visa exists, and you should be wary of anyone who does. What we can do is look at what you hold today and tell you which item is going to hold your file up, which is nearly always the passport and nearly always fixable. Starting that before you apply anywhere is the single best use of the next fortnight.

Want to know what would hold your file up?

Photograph your passport page and your certificates. We will tell you which stage would take the longest and what to start now.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an overseas job take from application to departure?

Nobody can honestly give you a single figure, because the stages that take longest are controlled by passport offices, attestation desks, approved medical centres and the destination's authorities rather than by you or your agent. What is reliably true is that the passport sets the outer limit, attestation is the longest stage you can start early, and a file nobody is following moves slowest of all.

Which stage takes the longest?

Passport reissue if you need one, because police verification happens at the address on your file and cannot be accelerated. After that, certificate attestation, which passes through more than one office and for many countries ends at that country's embassy in India. Both should be started before an employer is waiting rather than during mobilisation.

Can an agent speed up the process?

Not the government stages. An agent who offers to speed up police verification, attestation or emigration clearance for a payment is describing a bribe on a file that carries your name. What a genuine agent does is make each submission complete the first time and overlap the stages that can run alongside each other, which is where weeks are actually saved.

Can several stages run at the same time?

Yes, and this is the most commonly missed way to shorten a timeline. Attestation does not have to wait for the medical, insurance does not have to wait for anything, and police verification runs while you gather experience letters. A file worked in a straight line can take twice as long as the same file with the independent parts overlapped.

Why do timelines slip at the last moment?

Usually a name that does not match across passport and certificates, a medical report that has expired inside its validity window, or an employer not yet registered on the portal where the route requires clearance. All three are visible weeks earlier if anyone looks, which is why laying every document side by side early is worth more than chasing later.
